What is a Wayuu bag?
A Wayuu mochila is a drawstring bag associated with the crochet and weaving traditions of the Wayuu people of Colombia and Venezuela. Mochila's current collection is made from acrylic yarn by Wayuu artisans in Colombia.
1. Check what the seller actually tells you
Look for a clear statement of origin, material and construction. Be cautious when a listing uses a broad cultural story but gives no useful information about the product itself.
2. Look closely at the actual bag
Detailed photographs should show the base, body, drawstring, tassels, strap and attachment points. Small variations in stitch and dimensions are expected in an individually made piece; loose joins or damage are different and should be disclosed.
3. Do not use fibre as an authenticity test
Synthetic yarn does not make a Wayuu bag fake. Acrylic yarn is widely used for its clear colour and durability, and it is the material used in Mochila's current Wayuu assortment. Claims that an authentic bag must be cotton or wool are unreliable.
4. Treat pattern stories with care
Geometric designs and bold colour combinations are characteristic of many Wayuu bags, but a seller should not assign a specific symbolic meaning to a pattern unless that meaning has been documented for the individual piece.
5. Check whether the listing is specific or generic
A responsible listing should give dimensions and show the exact item, or clearly explain when photographs are representative. Copied images, conflicting descriptions and rows of supposedly handmade pieces presented as identical stock are reasons to ask more questions.
6. Ask for evidence, not vague badges
A certificate can be useful only when the issuing organisation and scope can be verified. Fair Trade certification is not a universal feature of Wayuu bags, so its absence or presence alone does not prove authenticity.
